Water Heaters

Q: I have black like soot on the outside of my hot water heater, should I replace it with a new one or can this be repaired?

A: It could be poor air mixture or gas pressure, or a dirty burner.

Q: Hot water my heater will light but I get no hot water at the sink. I do get hot water out of the tank drain plug. I took the line off that comes direct from the tank get hot water for a second then it goes cold. Could the tank be bad?

A: Could be a bad bypass valve or it's in the wrong position (switch lever), could also be a bad backflow valve.
